Neural Prolotherapy is a newer treatment option for pain and musculoskeletal injuries including tendonitis, osteoarthritis, peripheral neuropathy, chronic regional pain sydrome, migraine, frozen shoulder and other pain conditions. Neural Prolotherapy involves subcutaneous injections of dextrose (sugar) or mannitol in sterile water along the nerve associated with pain. Prolotherapy injections are given in order to stimulate the body to repair painful injured areas. With Neural Prolotherapy treatment, patients have shown not only a reduction or elimination of pain, but also healing and regeneration of tissue.

Who can benefit from Neural Prolotherapy?
Anyone with pain, chronic or otherwise. Individuals who have been treated in the past with multiple surgeries and cortisone injections that have nonetheless remained in pain have seen their pain disappear with a few Neural Prolotherapy treatments.

How does it work?
The working hypothesis is that dextrose and mannitol solutions help to repair inflamed nerves. These inflamed nerves under the skin are known to cause chronic painful conditions called “neuralgias” or “neuropathic pain”. We often call this “neurogenic inflammation”. Evidence supports that these small nerves responsible for muscles, ligaments and tendons are inflamed and prevent healing of these structures. Common treatments such as anti-inflammatories and cortisone injections don’t seem to treat neurogenic inflammation.

How many treatments are involved?
Most patients respond in as little as 1-2 treatments. Typically 6-8 sessions of micro-injections under the skin with a very small needle are necessary. Additional treatments may be necessary for maintenance. Most patients experience that the benefits of neural prolotherapy hold on average for 12-24 months after treatment.
